What is Devon Carers Voice?

Devon Carers Voice provides a voice for carers and supports them to ‘have a say’ in policy-making that affects them and the person they care for. Devon Carers Voice is part of the Healthwatch Devon network. Healthwatch is the health and social care consumer watchdog and collective voice for the people of Devon.

Carers are kept up-to-date with involvement opportunities, events and meetings through a fortnightly Devon Carers Voice e-bulletin and the quarterly Devon Carers newsletter.

Carers groups can also nominate one or two of their members to become ‘Carer Ambassadors’ who are able to attend County Carers Network meetings to meet carers from other areas and feedback the issues which are important to their group. The Carers Network meets three or four times a year and is the group which elects carer representatives to sit on strategic bodies and report back.

Individual carers can also provide feedback on any health or social care issue using Healthwatch Devon's 'Speak Out' form. Anyone without Internet access can also contact us to request paper copies of consultations. If you would like to find out more about  how to get involved with Devon Carers Voice, please contact us on tel: 03456 434435 or e-mail

Care Act Consultation

The Care Act 2014 received Royal Assent on the 14th of May 2014. This new Act modernises social care law and strengthens the rights and recognition of carers in the social care system. This includes for the first time a clear right for carers to receive services and a change to who is entitled to a Carers Assessment.

This consultation has now closed but you can click here to find out more about the changes.

Devon Carers Strategy Refresh

The Carers Strategy Board initiated a “refresh” exercise for the Devon ten year strategy for carers “Carers at the Heart of 21st Century Families and communities” in the summer. We have worked in depth in a steering group and in a workshop with a wide range of carers, and gathered the views of others through a short questionnaire and a specific workshop for Black and Minority Ethnic carers.

We are very grateful for the hard work of many carers on this which we think has much improved the draft and given us a substantial degree of confidence that we have identified the right “direction of travel”. The consultation period is now closed.

You can download a copy of the refreshed draft here.

You can find information about the work undertaken to date, including background papers, here (this any events, link will take you to a page on the Devon County Council website).

To find out more about or to obtain a hard copy of the draft please contact us on 08456 434 435 or use the webform here.
